'Life of Pi' | Film Poster

My A1 final for Digital Ilustration, + an animated gif of my proposed promotional element for the piece, which is designed for a digital billboard.

My rationale:
“ ‘Life of Pi’, directed by Ang Lee, was the film I chose for this assignment. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, it is a film which deals with many dark themes, such as loss and desperation. Despite this, it is also a film with a beautiful aesthetic as well as many magical elements, and the style I chose was to reflect these fantastical aspects. I chose to create my poster by digitally recreating a traditional woodcut and carving technique, such as that used to print some religious Hindu fabrics, in order to reflect the many influences of religion upon the main character, Pi.
I used a selective colour palette to reflect the limited colours used in carving and printing, with the fantastical elements being represented in orange so that they appear to ‘glow’ magically within the composition. The composition of my poster is designed in the shape of a traditional Indian paisley with a sprout inside, representing religious and personal growth. This reflects Pi’s coming of age and maturing over his journey in the film. To contrast with this I have used the youngest version of Pi that we meet in the film, looking up into the paisley to see his future. He is also looking up to see Richard Parker alone in the boat, a hint as to the truth of the story, and the entire ‘future’ which he is looking up into is ‘carved’ in a much more unrealistic and chidish style, contrasting with the realism of Pi himself. This is to subtly indicate to the viewer that perhaps his story is simply that – a story and a figment of his imagination.
Finally, Indian flying fish cut through the composition, adding a magical and fantastical element to the poster.”
